“No solo de trabajar vive el hombre” is the subtitle of the book Secretos De La Localización De Tesoros by Don Vicente Contreras Vázquez, also known as El 7 Oros. I never met the treasure hunter, but his widow and daughters continued to run this iconic shop in Mexico City’s Colonia Roma—Detectores S.A. de C.V.—long after his death. On pedestal small tables against a blue Riviera backdrop, I photographed there a few now-obsolete devices he had invented, resembling strange totems.
